Coconut whipped coffee is one of those drinks I keep coming back to when I want something a little different but still easy to make at home.

It has that creamy, cloud-like topping you get from dalgona coffee, but the coconut twist makes it taste softer and a bit more interesting.

If you already enjoy coconut lattes or anything with coconut cream, this version fits right in. I like making it in the afternoon when I want something iced but still satisfying.

The texture is what really sells it. Once you whip the coffee mixture properly, it turns thick and fluffy, and that contrast with cold milk underneath just works.

You can keep it simple or adjust it depending on how strong or sweet you want your drink.

Coconut Whipped Coffee Ingredients

Here’s what you need to make coconut dalgona coffee:

  • 2 tablespoons instant coffee
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons hot water
  • 1 cup coconut milk (carton or canned, depending on preference)
  • Ice cubes

Optional additions:

  • 1–2 teaspoons coconut syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Toasted coconut flakes for topping

Coconut Whipped Coffee Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Start with the coffee base

In a medium bowl, combine instant coffee, sugar, and hot water.

Make sure the water is hot enough to dissolve everything quickly.

This step matters more than it seems, because it helps create that thick texture later.

2. Whip the mixture

Using a hand mixer, milk frother, or whisk, whip the mixture until it turns light brown and fluffy.

This usually takes about 2–5 minutes with an electric mixer or closer to 8–10 minutes by hand.

You’ll know it’s ready when:

  • The texture looks like thick foam
  • It holds soft peaks
  • It doesn’t slide off the spoon too quickly

Don’t rush this part. If it’s under-whipped, the whole drink won’t feel the same.

3. Prepare the glass

Fill a glass with ice cubes. Pour in your coconut milk until the glass is about three-quarters full.

Pro tip: If you’re using canned coconut milk, give it a good shake or stir first so it’s smooth.

4. Add the whipped coffee

Spoon the whipped coffee mixture on top of the coconut milk.

You can go thick here, which is what I usually do, or keep it lighter depending on your taste.

5. Finish and mix

Before drinking, stir everything together. The layers look nice, but the flavor really comes together once it’s mixed.

Choosing the Right Coconut Milk

This makes a bigger difference than you might expect.

  • Carton coconut milk: lighter, more drinkable, closer to regular milk
  • Canned coconut milk: richer, creamier, stronger coconut flavor

I usually go with carton coconut milk for everyday drinks, but if you want something more filling, canned works well. Just dilute it slightly with water if it feels too thick.

How to Get the Best Whipped Texture

If your coffee isn’t whipping properly, it’s usually one of these:

  • You’re not using instant coffee (regular coffee won’t work)
  • The ratio is off (stick to equal parts coffee, sugar, and water)
  • The water isn’t hot enough
  • It hasn’t been whipped long enough

A hand mixer makes this much easier. I’ve done it by hand, and it works, but it takes patience.

Flavor Variations to Try

Once you make this once, it’s easy to switch things up.

Coconut Vanilla Version: Add a small splash of vanilla extract to the milk before topping. It softens the coffee flavor a bit and makes the whole drink smoother.

Toasted Coconut Version: Top with toasted coconut flakes. This pairs really well if you’re already linking to your toasted coconut cream cold brew.

Sweeter Coconut Coffee: Add coconut syrup directly into the milk before adding the whipped topping. This gives a more balanced sweetness instead of just sweet foam.

Strong Coffee Version: Reduce sugar slightly in the whipped mixture if you prefer a more intense coffee taste.

Tips for the Best Coconut Whipped Coffee

coconut dalgona recipe
  • Use instant coffee only — this is what creates the thick foam. Ground coffee or espresso won’t whip no matter how long you try
  • Stick to the 1:1:1 ratio (coffee, sugar, water) — changing this too much can make the foam collapse or stay runny
  • Whip until it turns thick and holds shape — if it slowly drips off the spoon, keep going
  • If using canned coconut milk, stir it well first so the cream and liquid fully combine
  • Taste before serving — coconut milk can vary, so adjust sweetness if needed
  • Add the whipped layer last and keep it thick — it balances the drink once stirre

How to Store Leftover Whipped Coffee

If you make extra whipped coffee, you can store it in the fridge for up to 2 days. It will lose some volume but still works.

Before using again give it a quick whisk or stir.

Note: Don’t freeze it, it won’t hold the texture well.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using regular brewed coffee instead of instant — it won’t form foam at all
  • Not whipping long enough — the mixture should look almost like soft peaks, not liqui
  • Using too little sugar — sugar helps stabilize the foam, so reducing it too much affects texture
  • Skipping hot water — warm or cold water won’t dissolve the ingredients properly
  • Adding whipped coffee into milk too early — always build the base first, then top it
  • Not stirring before drinking — the top layer is strong on its own and needs to be mixed
  • Using very thick canned coconut milk without adjusting — it can overpower the drink
