There are days when a regular latte just doesn’t feel like enough, and that’s exactly when I reach for this Nutella latte.

It’s rich and has that chocolate-hazelnut flavor that makes coffee feel more like a treat than a routine.

I started making this at home when I wanted something café-style without leaving the house, and it’s become one of those drinks I crave.

The best part is how simple it is. You don’t need anything complicated, just a few ingredients and a way to mix everything together so the Nutella melts smoothly.

Once you try it, it’s hard to go back to plain coffee.

Why This Nutella Latte Works So Well

What I like most about this recipe is how balanced it is. Nutella can easily take over if you add too much, but here it blends into the espresso and milk in a way that still lets the coffee come through.

You get that chocolate-hazelnut flavor without losing the latte feel.

It also works both hot and iced, which makes it easy to adjust depending on the mood. On colder days, I go for the hot version because it feels more comforting.

When it’s warmer, the iced version hits differently and feels more refreshing while still tasting indulgent.

Another thing that makes this recipe worth keeping is how customizable it is. You can make it stronger, sweeter, or creamier without changing the base too much.

How to Make Nutella Latte

Step 1: Brew the espresso or strong coffee

Start with 1–2 shots of espresso.

If you don’t have an espresso machine, strong brewed coffee works fine, but I think notice the flavor is better with espresso because it cuts through the sweetness of the Nutella.

Make sure the coffee is hot because that helps melt the Nutella in the next step.

Step 2: Melt the Nutella into the coffee

Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of Nutella directly into the hot espresso. This is the step that really matters, so don’t rush it.

Stir slowly until the Nutella completely melts and blends into the coffee. At first, it might look a bit separated or thick, but keep stirring and it will smooth out.

Pro tip: If your Nutella is a bit firm, you can microwave it for a few seconds before adding it, but usually the heat from the coffee is enough.

This step is what gives you that smooth, café-style texture instead of clumps of chocolate.

Step 3: Heat and froth the milk (for a hot latte)

Heat about 1 cup of milk. You can use whole milk, which gives the creamiest result, but I’ve also tried this with oat milk and it still works well.

If you have a milk frother, use it here. If not, you can heat the milk on the stove and whisk it, or shake it in a jar and then warm it up.

I usually aim for milk that’s hot but not boiling. Too hot and it changes the taste slightly.

Frothing isn’t required, but it does make the drink feel more like something you’d get at a café.

Step 4: Combine everything

Pour the Nutella espresso mixture over the milk. Do it slowly so everything blends nicely.

At this point, give it a gentle stir. You’ll notice the color turns into a light chocolate shade, which is exactly what you want.

Taste it here before adding anything else. Sometimes I stop at this step because it already tastes right.

Step 5: Add optional toppings

If you want to take it a bit further, you can add whipped cream on top, a small drizzle of Nutella, or Nutella cold foam.

Sometimes I also sprinkle a bit of cocoa powder or shaved chocolate. It’s not necessary, but it makes the drink feel more complete.

For an iced version, skip the heating part for the milk, add ice to a glass, then pour the Nutella coffee mixture over it and top with cold milk.

Tips for the Best Nutella Latte

One thing I learned quickly is that the order matters. Mixing Nutella into the coffee first gives a much smoother result than trying to stir it into milk later.

Another thing is adjusting sweetness. Nutella is already sweet, so I don’t usually add sugar. If you prefer sweeter drinks, you can add a small amount, but I’d recommend tasting it first.

If the drink feels too thick, just add a splash more milk. If it feels too light, increase the Nutella slightly or use less milk.

Using fresh, hot espresso also helps a lot. If the coffee sits too long before mixing, the Nutella doesn’t melt as smoothly.

Nutella Latte Variations to Try

There are a few ways I like to switch this up depending on what I’m in the mood for.

A peanut butter Nutella latte works surprisingly well. Just add a small teaspoon of peanut butter when melting the Nutella. It makes the drink richer and slightly more savory.

If you want something closer to a dessert drink, you can add a bit of caramel syrup. It pairs well with the hazelnut flavor and makes everything taste more layered.

For a lighter version, use less Nutella and switch to a lower-fat milk. It still tastes good, just not as rich.

You can also make it iced with Nutella cold foam on top if you want something more similar to a coffee shop drink.

How to Store and Make Ahead

This is one of those drinks that’s best fresh, but you can prep parts of it ahead.

You can mix the Nutella and espresso and store it in the fridge for up to a day. When you’re ready to drink it, just heat it slightly and add fresh milk.

If you’re making iced versions, you can keep the Nutella coffee mixture chilled and just pour over ice when needed.

I don’t recommend storing the full latte with milk already mixed in, because the texture changes and it doesn’t taste the same.

Why Nutella Latte Is Worth Making at Home

I’ve ordered similar drinks at coffee shops, and they’re usually either too sweet or don’t really taste like Nutella at all. Making it at home gives you control over everything.

It also ends up being much cheaper, especially if this becomes a regular thing. And once you get used to the process, it takes less than 10 minutes.

For me, this is one of those recipes that feels like a small upgrade to a normal coffee day. It’s simple, but it changes the whole experience.
